Celebrating long-term commitment We proudly celebrate Morgan Griffiths, our Senior Manager of Advocacy and Membership, for his remarkable 20-year tenure with WESSA. Since joining in February 2004, Morgan has held numerous positions across the country, consistently demonstrating his commitment to environmental conservation. In his current role, he not only advocates for the environment but also leads by example, often found on the slopes of the Drakensberg, clearing alien trees from water catchment areas. Morgan’s dedication to WESSA and the broader cause of environmental stewardship is an inspiration to us all. “Over 20 years, WESSA has been the foundation of my career. Starting as a PE Region Conservation Officer, I’ve gained experience in various conservation projects, advocacy, environmental education, and biodiversity policy development. Additionally, I have devoted 13 years to the Blue Flag programme. I’ve had the privilege of mentoring over 740 youth for careers in our environmental and ecotourism sectors. I am indeed grateful for the opportunity to have spent 20 fulfilling years at WESSA.”

Groen Sebenza internship programme In 2023, we hosted 23 SANBI interns as part of the Groen Sebenza programme. These interns were placed throughout WESSA, matched with mentors, and gained valuable real-world experience. This initiative prepares them for careers in the environmental and conservation sectors, ensuring the next generation of leaders is well-equipped to continue our mission. Safety and compliance training To strengthen our dedication to child safety, Nonsikelelo Mbokazi and Lindokuhle Mkhize completed training as Designated Safety Officers. In addition, all employees will complete the necessary security screening. This is crucial to ensure our compliance with

Navigating workplace change In 2023, 28 team members participated in workshops focused on navigating change, which is an inevitable part of organisational growth. These sessions aimed to help us reflect on and adapt to workplace change more effectively. They provided a platform for sharing wisdom and experiences, celebrating our collective knowledge, and building the skills to navigate change success fully. As a result, these workshops have been instrumental in developing resilience and fostering a positive attitude towards changes within our team. the Child Safety Act, and it reinforces our commitment to safeguarding the children we interact with in our various programmes and activities.

Employee engagement The results of the Employee Engagement Survey were very positive. They revealed that most of our staff are highly fulfilled and en gaged in their roles. The survey showed that an impressive 88% of respondents expressed trust in the leadership team, which reflects the strong, transparent leadership that guides WESSA and the collaborative culture we have fostered. Trust in Leadership team Our “What’s Up WESSA” monthly sessions are a key part of our internal communication strategy. This online gathering allows us to share information, ask questions, and enjoy lighter moments together. Our goal is to build community, encourage open dialogue, and connect field staff with senior leadership. To support our team members’ well being during their extensive travels, we have re-engaged with ER24 to provide prompt emergency assistance while on duty, reflecting our commitment to a safe and supportive work environment.
