o Once adopted, this should receive full commitment of all Board members and be communicated consistently and unambiguously to members, and consistently implemented • Meticulously implement internal governance and accountability systems • Establish additional sub-committees chaired by Board members with co-opted members and working groups and involving selected WESSA volunteers and staff • Develop a Charter or Code of Conduct for Board members, followed by a reputable training course by e.g. the Institute of Directors https://www.iodsa.co.za/page/training_main o This should make it clear that all Board members are duty-bound to act in the best interest of One WESSA, guided by the strategic plan • It’s crucial that all important changes should be negotiated and that the entire Board should support the newly negotiated direction. Strategies • Build on the strong presence of women in WESSA to develop an organizational culture grounded in empathy, cooperation and communication • Re-align, and if necessary, retrain existing staff to drive or coordinate streamlined and consolidated activities and workstreams that are directly aligned with WESSA’s Theory of Change (Figure 8) • Appoint contract staff through non-continuing work agreements for short-term contracts and intermittent tasks • Flatten the organogram and right-size certain divisions to be more congruent with revenues, organization size and turnover • Harness and channel the considerable expertise amongst volunteers through working groups, directed workstreams and clearly defined requests for skills contributions o Establish an expertise database, potentially run and maintained by a group of volunteers • Harness and channel the influencing potential of high-profile young people on social media (Twitter, Tik-Tok, etc.); establish social media ambassadors and ”environmental shape- shifters” and give them recognition. 7.4 Human resources 7.4.1 Opportunity: Human resource development
