including some of the vegetables and herbs from our garden. A sensory garden was started on the pre-primary campus as a learning space for the little ones, but the garden is open to all grades as an outdoor classroom. WASTE AND RECYCLING PROJECTS A Bokashi composting project recycles all our foodwaste, producing a nutrient-rich pre-compost which helps to feed our garden.
We have a number of recycling projects on the go, including creating seed paper – which is recycled paper with vegetable (or flower) seeds included in it while being made.
These pieces of paper can be planted to grow new seedlings after being used as greetings cards, etc.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND CONSERVATION PROJECTS
We actively support a number of charity projects in our district, encouraging our school families to get involved with initiatives such as the Blanket square drive, Marshmallow Egg collection and Slipper Day fundraising. Some of our conservation-related projects include adopting owls and catch- and-release fishing. To support rhino conservation on World Rhino Day (2019), our school collaborated with the Threatened Traveller Project to raise awareness on the desperate state of rhino conservation in our country. A series of lesson plans, coupled with a selection of wonderfully varied resources – such as a fibreglass rhino horn and a miniature rhino model – was developed by Charterhouse. This package can easily integrate into any curriculum to raise youth awareness about the conservation of these highly threatened species.
Our eco-bricking project, filling empty bottles with compacted scrap plastic, continues to do well. We are encouraging children to recycle at home and bring their recycling to school, so even bottle top collection continues with our ‘Give it a top’ campaign. Our recycling company has not always been reliable with pick up but recycling has continued nonetheless.
We aim to equip our children with awareness of global technology trends while integrating 21st century skills
