WESSA Schools Programme Annual Report 2019/2020
The Steinkopf area is host to a high number of plant ‘Species of Conservation Concern’ such as the Critically Endangered Cheirodopsis peculiaris (Eseloor) and the iconic Pachypodium namaquanum (Halfmens).
The school’s multiple awards include Gold, Platinum and more recently a Diamond Decade Year and a Bronze Decade award for creating cool space on the school’s campus ( Climate Change theme). The school’s vegetable garden, water conservation, recycling and tourism projects – as well as a variety of sustainability-related projects that tackle soil erosion, plant and habitat restoration and rock garden establishment – have inspired learners and community members. The Eco-School themes and projects help to provide solutions to essential needs and services in this area and the learners are rapidly gaining life skills and insights that will help them for the rest of their lives. The WESSA Schools Programme Manager, Cindy, hails from Steinkopf – where her years at Ferdinand Brecher Primary School, amid the stark but enchanting landscapes of the far Northern Cape, shaped her love for the environment.
